FRENCH READING AND LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Our reading and language program will be based on Mille Images by Line Picard.   We will advance at a pace which is comfortable for the students.   This is very important as there is a wide range of ability in the class.   As parents and teacher, our goal for the students is improved reading comprehension and greater confidence.   Progress may be slow in the beginning, but we must constantly encourage the students and try to gradually decrease the amount of their dependency on us as helpers.   The work will normally follow this format:
  • Student reading of selection.

  • Teacher reading of selection.

  • Group reading of selection:   During this time, students are encouraged to offer positive assistance to their peers with regard to pronunciation (including the CAREFUL rule), decoding of new vocabulary, punctuation, expression, and the incorporation of liaisons.

The CAREFUL Rule: Cross out the vowels in the word CAREFUL.   The consonants that remain (C, R, F and L) are, generally speaking, the only consonants pronounced at the end of French words.
Liaisons: When a word ends in a consonant, and the next word in sequence starts with a vowel, the consonant (even if it is not C, R, F or L) is pronounced.   There are, however, some resultant changes in pronunciation.   These are the most common:   quand il or quand elle (the d at the end of quand must be pronounced t); les amis (the s of les must be pronounced z).

  • Reading Comprehension:   The purpose of this exercise (where, as a class, we translate the text into English) is to ensure that students do actually understand what they are reading, and that they are not guessing inappropriately.   Students are again encouraged to offer positive support to their classmates.   This class exercise is also excellent because it forces students to realize that word order in English and French is not always the same.

  • Written Reading Comprehension:   Students will be encouraged, wherever they can, to use words from the question to help construct their answer.   At all times it will be emphasized that copying mistakes are not acceptable, and that students must read through their work to ensure that they have answered the question using information drawn from the text.   Answers must make sense.

  • Reading Test:   Reading aloud and explanation of meaning

  • Language Exercises:   20 vocabulary words in common daily use are selected from each chapter for dictation and word study.

WORD STUDY ACTIVITIES:

(Students may have to do some or all of the following exercises depending on where we are in our course of study):
  1. Students must find the vocabulary words, usually in an altered form, in the text.   This exercise teaches a very valuable lesson:   that words in a text and their dictionary form are not always identical.
  2. Students must locate all nouns in the list and write them with the correct article.
  3. Students must locate all adjectives in the list and give their masculine and feminine forms.
  4. Students must locate all adverbs in the list.
  5. Students must locate conjugated verbs and infinitive forms in the list.
  6. Students must unscramble words from the list that may or may not have a letter missing.   The group of missing letters must be used to write another list word that, again, may or may not have a letter missing.
  7. Students must match definitions with the correct list word.
  8. Students must conjugate in the tense and person demanded certain verbs from the list.

COIN LECTURE (SRA READING LAB):

This is an individual reading advancement program.   Students will be prepared for the initial placement test.   The results of this test will allow each child to be placed at their just right level.   With my encouragement, they will be able to set goals for their improvement.   This is an excellent program, and has yet to be topped in its utility to our students.
Please remember to check your child's progress in the Coin Lecture on a regular basis.   Although this is an individualized program, students’ term marks will be based on their reading level as it compares with that of other students.   The levels are as follows:

Rose*
Rose**
Rose***
Rouge
Orange
Jaune
Marron
Vert
Bleu
Beige

FRENCH WRITING:

In order to receive an A, B or C standing in writing and self-editing, students are expected to compose and correct the majority of certain assignments, using their own initiative and the many resources available in class.
Most students find this work very challenging.   However, everyone will have increased success due to the reading comprehension exercises that they will complete based on our study of Mille Images.   Model sentences will be used if needed, and the amount that the student is asked to produce on his/her own will be gradually increased.
In cases where errors are prolific, students will be required to redo the work completely.   The reasoning behind this is very simple.   If a student takes too long to complete an exercise and/or has difficulty completing it (indicated by an excess of errors), this is because the underlying concepts have not been internalized by the student.   Some students will catch on immediately, most will require one or more repetitions before their answers become automatic.   Once answers are automatic, the student has, to some extent, mastered the concept.   If such repetition is coupled with necessary editing, there is usually a significant improvement in spelling, grammar and the student's ability to write independently.
