Harry Potter

I remember the day I first realized the strength of Harry Potter's literary presence. All of the kids, and some of the adults on our block, were impatiently awaiting the debut of book number four:   Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire or Harry Potter et la Coupe de Feu.   I actually witnessed students giving up Pokemon and Nintendo in order to read the story of this young wizard!   Children with no attention span had become bookworms!!

A few rave reviews later, I was engrossed in the first volume.   Needless to say, I loved it.   The plot was riveting, the characters engaging, the fresh and boundless imagination of J.K. Rowling made me feel as if I, too, was living the Hogwarts adventure.

The Books:

Each book in this series recounts a year of Harry Potter's adventures at Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft.   In order to get to this school, Harry and his friends must board the Hogwarts Express which leaves from Platform Nine and Three Quarters at their local train station.   The fantastic characters that Harry, Ron and Hermione meet and the incredible, magical adventures they live are all outside of the world of ordinary people, better known as the Muggle world.   Nonetheless, we Muggle readers do stand on tiptoe, hoping to get a better peek at the inside!

Both French and English versions are very well written.   The vocabulary and expressions used, do, however, call for more advanced readers.   If your children are really keen about these books, consider reading aloud to them, or sharing the reading with them.   It really doesn't matter if you have to contribute more in the beginning.   You are building a love of books, the value of this can never be surpassed.

The Films:

Always read the book first, that is what any purveyor of timeless tales will advise you.   Film has endless possibilities, but it is still outdone by the written word, especially when an author has the rich vocabulary and fine articulation of J.K. Rowling.   The Harry Potter films come highly recommended because they are superbly done, include many special effects and do not stray far from the original story.
