A Note To Parents:

A love of reading is the best way to ensure that your child will have optimal success in a French Immersion programme.

Ideally, your child should be well acquainted with his English letters, blends and phonemes before beginning his study of a second language. He should even be a fluent reader at his grade level or beyond. Why? - This gives him a base for comparison between the two languages. It will help him to realize, often unconsciously, what is common to both languages, and what can be so vastly different.

You should read to your child in French if possible. Your highschool French will probably be sufficient at the lower levels. However, if you have little or no knowledge of this language, surround your child with books, both French and English. Read to him in English, but encourage him equally to leaf through the French books. Better yet, do this together. You will be surprised at how soon he will recognize the odd word, and then try to decode new vocabulary.

As a parent, you will have to ensure that your child is constantly choosing French books. If you are not diligent about this, once English is introduced into his school program, he may perceive the latter language as easier, especially if this is what you speak at home.

The following pages highlight books that have proven themselves in a French Immersion programme. Please continue to check back with us, as the site will be updated whenever we have gathered new material.
