Computer Instruction is only available in the Metro Toronto and Durham regions of Ontario.
SuccessMaker Educational Software incorporates video, sound and interactive animation into its instructional and learning activities.
Students work in the program in which they demonstrate the greatest academic need. One hour per week of computer time is required over a period of at least 15 weeks in order for significant advancement to occur. A second subject may be added, but would require a similar time commitment.
Students start each program at an arbitrary, but necessarily low grade level. Their progress from this point on is individual. Each 15 minute session contains exercises from a variety of skill areas. Students’ answers are processed and their working level is adjusted up or down depending on response time and accuracy of performance. This continues for between 10 and 14 sessions, at the end of which time, an accurate overall grade level is assigned.
Immediate feedback is given that relates specifically to the errors the student has made. Each subsequent session takes previous performance into account. Revision may be implemented or a repetition of similar types of questions may be what is necessary in order to eliminate errors. The system will automatically provide verbal help and other intervention strategies to ensure that skills are mastered.
SuccessMaker adapts to each student’s learning style, so that they can work at a pace which is comfortable for them. Hence, more advanced learners are constantly challenged, while slower students are continually encouraged. Chronological age is not factored into any session assignments.
Comprehensive individual reports detail performance results in all skill areas undertaken. Students may also consult a running score while they work.
Teacher assistance is provided until students are more familiar with the demands of the program. However, students are encouraged to work independently. They learn to read questions carefully, to identify what is expected of them, and to work systematically.
